Spirulina Thief

This picture of my cat Gary hangs on a prominent wall in my house. Whenever I look at it, it makes me smile. I’ve been trying to come up with a reason to do a blog entry to accompany the photo (other than “isn’t my cat adorable?”). Then Gary himself provided one.

My husband and I occasionally take spirulina (blue-green algae) tablets as a supplement. Before I explain what happened, I have to emphasize that Gary doesn’t care about food much. To him, eating his dinner is secondary to cuddling. He is also indifferent to cat treats. But when he caught a whiff of the spirulina the other day, he got wide-eyed, reached up to the table where I’d placed the spirulina tablet (Gary has a long reach), and swiped it onto the floor. Before I could take it away from him, he munched it down like it was the best treat he ever had.

I quickly checked online to make sure spirulina is okay for cats, and everything I’ve found indicates that it is. We then offered a half a spirulina tablet to our other cat, Mitzi, so she wouldn’t feel left out. In a split second, she wolfed it down, too, frantically looking around for more. I don’t plan to make a habit of giving it to them until I find out more. Does anybody else out there have a cat who likes spirulina?

Ducks…and More Ducks

My husband and I are fortunate to share our property with lots of wildlife (actually, it’s they who share it with us). As you can see in the photos, the ducks have been too cute for words these days.

The first photo shows Eleanor and Sam coming to the front door to ask for their breakfast. They do this whenever I’m running late with their morning corn. The ducks order us around pretty regularly, as do the rabbits, woodchucks, cardinals, and bluejays. The deer already ate our pea and bean plants, so it’s Round Two for the vegetable garden.

The second photo is Delilah and her adorable new babies that she paraded up from the pond to give us a closer look.

Our cat Gary doesn’t quite know what to make of the ducks — he looks at them from the window, then looks at us with his “question mark” look. Apparently, ducks aren’t in his data base.

I had planned to post something wonderful about vegan food today, but my cat, Gary, wouldn’t hear of it. He’s been a little testy with me lately and I finally figured out that he wants me to post his photo on my blog. It’s not that he’s especially egotistical, he just thinks it’s his obligation to spread his adorableness around. I can’t argue with his logic. So instead of a photo of my latest lasagna, here’s….Gary! Cute, huh?
