Friday with Friends Interview + Cookbook Giveaway

Late-breaking news:  I’m thrilled to announce that today I am the “friend” on the “Fridays with Friends” feature on Allison’s Gourmet Sweet Talk blog. I hope you take the time to read the interview. Allison asked me lots of great questions.  You can read my tips for going vegan, find out how I decide what to write, and lots more.

PLUS…while you’re there you can enter to win a copy of Quick-Fix Vegan.  Now for the really fun part:  the comment you’re asked to leave to enter the cookbook giveaway is to suggest a theme for my next cookbook.  Who knows, not only might you win a copy of my latest cookbook…you might also be the inspiration for a future cookbook!

Even if you already have a copy of Quick-Fix Vegan, enter the giveaway — if you win, you can always pass it on to a friend — and I’d love to hear what theme you’d pick for a new book!

To clarify: the cookbook giveaway is on the Allison’s Gourmet blog site (via the above links) — not on this site.  Good luck!

Heart Healthy Pizza: Review + Cookbook Giveaway!

I first mentioned Heart Healthy Pizza: Over 100 Recipes for the Most Nutritious Pizza in the World on my blog last week. Now I want to tell you more about this breakthrough cookbook (and also give you the chance to win a free copy!)
Heart Healthy Pizza is the first and only cookbook dedicated to the fine art and science of making vegan pizza.  In this book, author Mark Sutton guides the reader on how to make a variety of innovative crusts, sauces, and toppings, with separate sections in the book dedicated to each component. Heart Healthy Pizza has been five years in the making – I know this because I’ve been in touch with Mark as he was developing his book, so I know firsthand how much effort he has put into it.
All of the plant-based recipes contain no added oil and many of the crusts are gluten-free.  The toppings and sauces are made with a wide variety of vegetables, grains, beans, and other plant-based ingredients and include many “cheesy” sauces in a variety of textures and flavors. Sauces include a Quinoa, Artichokes, and Dijon Mustard Sauce, shown in the top photo (photo by Valerie Wagner); as well as a Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, and Chiles Sauce shown here:
There is also a chapter devoted to innovative pizza creations made with different combinations of the crusts, sauces, and toppings.  Readers are encouraged to “mix and match” the various components, allowing for seemingly infinite variety.  The recipes are super-nutritious, cost-effective, easy to make, and delicious.
If you like the idea of making delicious, inexpensive, no-added oil, plant-based pizza, then you’ll love Heart Healthy Pizza — Mark Sutton’s gift to vegan pizza-lovers.  You can buy the book direct at HeartHealthyPizza — where you can also see more pizza photos (there are no photos in the book) — or you can buy it through Amazon.  Below is a sample recipe from the book for the Millet, Sunflower Seeds, and Oregano Sauce shown in this photo:
(Note: Recipe and photos ©2012 by Mark Sutton.)
Millet, Sunflower Seeds, and Oregano Sauce
For the sauce:
1 cup cooked millet
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
2 T. corn starch
2 T. dried crushed oregano
1/4 cup raw sunflower seeds
1 cup water

Pizza dough
Toppings of choice

METHOD:
1. Combine all the sauce ingredients except the sunflower seeds and water in a blender or food processor. Pulse a few times, gradually adding the seeds and water until the mixture can be processed into a smooth and thick pancake batter-like consistency.
 2. Pour the sauce over prepared dough and pizza toppings, then bake at 425 to 450 degrees F. (depending upon your oven) for 15 to 20 minutes.
Recipe Notes:
• This recipe makes a very thick sauce. As blobs on top of the pizza, it is reminiscent of raw mozzarella slices on a Margherita-style pizza. Works well for one 12″ to 14″ pizza.
• Soaking the sunflower seeds for 2 to 4 hours, then draining, will make the sauce a bit more fluffy in texture.

Another Monday, Another Winner — and a New Giveaway

How better to brighten a Monday than with a new cookbook giveaway!  But first, it’s time to announce the winner of last week’s giveaway.  The winner (chosen randomly via Random.org) of a copy of Vegan Fire and Spice: 200 Sultry and Savory Global Recipes is: #15 – Celyn.  Congratulations, Celyn! Please e-mail me with your mailing address and I’ll get the book right out to you.
And now for a new “Make My Monday” giveaway. This week’s prize is a copy of Vegan Unplugged: A Pantry Cuisine Cookbook and Survival Guide.  My husband Jon write the survival guide section (a must-have for whenever the power goes out — we lived through a few hurricanes, so I know) and I wrote the 80 recipes, all of which can be made using only pantry ingredients and can be ready in less than 15 minutes.  The best part of these recipes is their versatility: if you have fresh or frozen ingredients, you can use them, but if you only have canned or dehydrated ingredients, these recipes can be invaluable.
Many of these recipes, such as the Samosadillas shown above, as well as the Almost-Instant Black Bean Chili and Puttanesca in a Pinch are regulars in my house.  Here’s another favorite — Moroccan-Spiced Vegetable Stew:

These recipes are quick, easy, and delicious.  What more could one ask for, except maybe these no-bake Ginger Rum Balls:

Indian Indulgence + Cookbook Giveaway at VHP

I told you about our shopping excursion last week when we went to the Asian market and Trader Joes. Since it usually adds up to over two hours of driving and easily over two hours of shopping (the way I shop, anyway, as in going up and down EVERY aisle!), we also take the opportunity to go to lunch and make a day of it.

There are lots of great ethnic restaurants in the Centreville area. Our current favorite is called Masala Country and it serves mostly Southern Indian food, as well as Indian fusion, with elements of Thai and Chinese. We especially enjoy the Southern Indian specialties that we haven’t been able to find anywhere else in the area.

The top photo is the hauntingly delicious Manchurian cauliflower appetizer, so spicy and good. This is the uttapam — an Indian pancake made with green chiles, green onion, and cilantro, served with a vegetable sambar.

Next is the magnificent dosa — made with lentil flour, this crispy delicate crepe is filled with a spicy potato mixture and served with sambar. As you can see, it’s bigger than the plate it is served on, but is so light, eating the whole thing is not a problem.

Needless to say, we didn’t need to eat again until the next day and even brought home some leftovers. With the promise of a lunch like this, it makes me want to go shopping again real soon!

COOKBOOK GIVEAWAY: My hubby’s company, Vegan Heritage Press is giving away a copy of their latest cookbook, The Blooming Platter Cookbook: A Harvest of Seasonal Vegan Recipes by Betsy DiJulio. It’s a fantastic book with great recipes and gorgeous photos. Head on over to the VHP blog and enter to win!
